The demo, start to finish
The free demo has been on Steam since 4 June 2026 and installs from the store page above the buy box. It opens the colony, the expedition sites and the base camp, and it is the only way to play Penguin Colony before 16 October 2026.
The Penguin Colony demo is free, it has been on Steam since 4 June 2026, and it is the only way to play the game before it launches on 16 October 2026. Here is what the slice actually contains and how to get the most out of one session.
What the demo is
It is a separate, free download rather than a timed trial: the demo runs under its own Steam app id and installs from the same store page as the full game, sitting above the buy box. It arrived during Summer Game Fest week in June 2026, alongside three new trailers, and it has kept the store page busy ever since.
How to install it
- Open the Penguin Colony store page on Steam
- Use the demo entry above the purchase box, which installs the free build directly
- No purchase, no wishlist requirement, no sign-up
That is the whole process. If the store tells you the game is not available in your region, see troubleshooting before assuming anything has been delisted.

What the demo gives you
| Area | What is there | Worth doing once |
|---|---|---|
| The colony shore | Penguins, water, the first movement lessons | Walk the whole length |
| The expedition trail | Marked route inland with human activity | Follow it at least twice |
| The base camp | The demo's biggest set piece | Arrive slowly and watch |
| The ice interior | Interior routes, ice structures, dark | Explore with the audio up |
| Open ice | Slopes, gaps, orb trails | Test the stamina ring here |
What it holds back
The demo does not show you the shape of the story. The full game is built around two rival human expeditions in 1939, and the demo gives you enough of their presence to understand the tone without settling any of the questions the launch version is holding. There is also no combat and no inventory to speak of, so treat the demo as an observation sandbox rather than a systems preview.
How to spend one good session
Give it ninety minutes and do it in this order: shoreline walk, climb test, trail to camp, then one long wander with the audio turned up. The audio work is a large part of what the demo is selling, and the narrated passages land better when you are not looking for a route at the same time.
Players who bounced off the demo almost always describe the same experience, which is getting lost in the first hour and losing the thread of what they were supposed to be doing. The fix is the landmark routine in navigation and orbs.
New to the game entirely? Start with the beginner guide, then the walkthrough once the movement clicks.
