Penguin Colony Guide

Story and factions

Quick answer

It is 1939 and two human expeditions are digging in the Antarctic: the Nazis, who want the ancient thing under the ice for their own ends, and the Kaitiaki, who have spent generations putting it back to sleep. The penguins are the audience.

Penguin Colony is set in 1939, two years after H.P. Lovecraft died, and follows two rival human expeditions into the Antarctic. You are not part of either of them. You are a penguin who lives there, and the game's whole premise is that you can only watch.

The setup

An impossibly ancient being is asleep under the ice and something has called it. The two human groups have both heard the call and want opposite things from it. That is the entire conflict, and it is resolved by the humans long before the game gives you any say in it, which is the point.

The year that matters

1939 is doing real work here. It places the story in the gap between Lovecraft's death and the war, which lets the game use a familiar historical frame without asking you to accept a fully fictional world. The Nazi expedition arrives with the same assumptions a 1939 expedition would: that the Antarctic is empty, that ancient things are resources, and that they are the ones who get to decide.

The Kaitiaki are the counterweight, and they are drawn from Maori culture rather than invented from nothing. The studio built a whole trailer around that influence, which tells you how central it is to the game's answer for why anyone would leave this thing where it is.

Why you are a penguin

This is the design decision that everything else hangs off. As a penguin you cannot change the world around you, you cannot fight, and you cannot negotiate. The most you can do is slide, swim or waddle out of the way, and then find a vantage point. The game's own description puts it plainly: you follow the humans in their discoveries and witness their minds collapse under the strain.

What the narrative withholds

The demo gives you presence without explanation. You see the expedition's apparatus, you watch a breakdown, and you learn nothing about what they found. The full game is where the mythos answers live: this is described as a sincere expansion of Lovecraft's world, drawing on At the Mountains of Madness and The Shadow Out of Time, rather than a straight adaptation of either.

For the sources of that horror, see influences. For the sequence in which you actually meet the factions in the demo, see the walkthrough.
