The base camp
The camp is the expedition's foothold and the demo's first big set piece. Get close enough to watch the humans work, stay low on the ice, and listen: the audio does most of the storytelling here.
The expedition's base camp is the loudest thing in the Penguin Colony demo and the closest the game comes to a set piece. It is also entirely passive: nothing in the camp asks you for input, which is exactly why it lands.
What the camp is
It is the human expedition's foothold in the Antarctic: structures, equipment, work lights and people who are already starting to come apart. In the story's terms, this is where the two rival groups establish themselves before the deeper ice swallows them. In gameplay terms, it is a location you watch.

How to approach it
Approach from downslope and come in slowly. The camp's lighting makes it very easy to be seen and, more importantly, being in a hurry means you arrive with a head full of route-finding instead of paying attention.
- Come in from below the structures, not along the ridge line
- Use the equipment and the buildings as cover
- Stop moving when the audio changes
- Keep your return line in view at the same time as the camp
What plays out
The camp runs a sequence, and the sequence is the point. Human figures work, argue and deteriorate; the camp's audio does most of the storytelling, which is why the demo's audio menu matters more than it looks. Players consistently report the same reaction to the camp's biggest animation, which is that it is genuinely frightening precisely because nothing about it involves you.
The second thing players notice is that the camp is where the game's minimalist HUD pays off. With no objective markers and no enemy indicators, you are just a bird standing on ice watching people lose their minds.
Watching without interrupting
| Phase | Where to stand | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Arrival | Downslope, behind equipment | Figures moving, lights, machine noise |
| Work | Mid-distance, in shadow | Conversation you cannot follow |
| Breakdown | Close, but not in the open | The sequence the demo is built around |
| Aftermath | Leave the way you came | Silence, then wind |
What it means for your route
The camp is the pivot of the demo. Everything before it is approach and everything after it is interior ice. If you are planning a session, treat reaching the camp as the halfway mark, and do not carry a half-empty stamina ring into the interior routes.
Once you have seen it, the natural next step is the ice interior described in the demo walkthrough, or the story and factions page if you want to know who those people are.
