Controls and settings
You can play the whole game on a keyboard, a pad or a DualShock/DualSense controller, and nothing in it relies on timed input. Set narration above default, then use the audio menu's per-setting example sounds to tune the wind.
Penguin Colony asks very little of your hands. There is no combat, no inventory and no timed input, so the control scheme is mostly about movement and about not fighting the camera. Here is what the game exposes and how to set it up before you walk into the ice.
The control scheme
You have three movement verbs and a camera. Sliding and swimming are extensions of movement rather than separate modes, which is why the game plays comfortably on a keyboard alone.
| Input option | What Steam lists | Practical effect |
|---|---|---|
| Keyboard only | Keyboard Only Option | The whole game is playable without a pad |
| Controller | Full controller support | Automatic prompt swap on Xbox, DualShock and DualSense pads |
| Recommended | Gamepad Recommended | The studio leans toward a pad for camera work |
| Timed input | Playable without Timed Input | No sequence demands reflexes |
Controller or keyboard
Play whichever you already trust. The listed support covers Xbox-style pads, DualShock and DualSense, so a PlayStation pad is recognised, and prompts adapt. Players have asked for more PlayStation-style button iconography in the demo, which is a cosmetic difference rather than a functional one.
The audio menu is a genuine feature
The demo plays a short example sound for each individual slider in the audio menu, so you can hear what you are changing instead of guessing. Players have been unusually fond of this, and it is the fastest way to get a mix that suits narration-heavy play.
Start by raising voice and lowering ambience a notch, then walk into open ice and adjust again. The wind is the loudest thing in the game.
Comfort and colour
Two of the listed features exist specifically for people who find first-person snow unpleasant to look at.
- Camera Comfort: keeps the worst of the motion manageable
- Color Alternatives: swaps the palette for people who struggle to separate ice tones
- Custom Volume Controls: per-channel, with the example-sound menu
- Stereo Sound: the audio mix is authored for two channels

Setting up a first session
| Setting | Suggested starting point |
|---|---|
| Input | Whichever you use for other walking sims |
| Narration volume | High: the narration carries the story |
| Ambience | Slightly reduced from default |
| Camera Comfort | On if snow glare bothers you |
| Colour Alternatives | Try it if ice and fog blur together |
Once those are set, the beginner guide takes about an hour, and the full list of comfort features is broken down in accessibility and comfort.
