Troubleshooting the demo
Two things worth knowing: ultrawide is not a menu option in the demo and needs a community hex edit, and if the store tells you the game is not available in your region that is an availability notice rather than a delisting.
The Penguin Colony demo is a small, mostly stable build, and the problems players actually run into are specific: ultrawide support that does not exist in the menu, a store page that occasionally says the game is unavailable, and controller prompts that do not match every pad.
Ultrawide is not a setting
There is no ultrawide option in the demo's options menu. The community fix, posted on the Steam forums in a thread titled "Ultrawide Fix For Demo", is a file edit rather than a setting change, and it comes in two parts.
- In the demo folder, open
Penguin Colony_DatathenManaged, and openAssembly-CSharp.dllin a hex editor. Replace every instance of the 16:9 aspect value39 8E E3 3Fwith the hex value for your own display's aspect ratio, then save. - Back in
Penguin Colony_Data, opendata.unity3dwith UABEANext. Selectsharedassets0in the side menu, search for43RT, right-click the result, choose Edit Data, and setm_Widthandm_Heightto your screen resolution.
You need to do both steps. Changing only the aspect value in the DLL gets you a stretched image; changing only the resolution leaves the field of view wrong.
"Not available in your region"
One player thread reports the store suddenly showing a "not available in your region" message. That is an availability notice about where the page can be bought, not a delisting, and the game's store page has stayed live with the demo attached. The studio did not respond in that thread.
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| No download button on the store page | Regional availability | Check the demo's own store listing directly |
| Ultrawide letterboxing or stretching | No native ultrawide support | The two-step community fix above |
| PlayStation pad shows Xbox prompts | Prompt iconography | Cosmetic; the pad itself is supported |
| Game does not see the controller | Detection runs at launch | Plug the pad in before starting the game |
Controller detection
Full controller support is listed, including DualShock and DualSense, and players confirm PlayStation pads work. The complaint that appears most often is about button prompt icons rather than function: people who use PS4 or PS5 pads have asked for matching on-screen glyphs. That is a polish request, not a bug you can fix.
If your pad is not detected at all, connect it before launching the demo rather than during a session. Hot-plugging is not handled reliably in the demo build.
Reporting a bug properly
The studio keeps a pinned thread on the Steam forums for demo feedback and asks for four things: the build number, which is printed at the bottom left of the main menu screen, what happened, what you expected to happen instead, and any evidence such as a screenshot or clip. Reports that include the build number are the ones the team can act on.
